A new approach to dark spots

Melasyl is a proprietary molecule that L'Oréal developed over 18 years of research. Unlike vitamin C or hydroquinone which inhibit tyrosinase (the enzyme that triggers melanin production), Melasyl intercepts melanin precursors before they form visible pigmentation. This is a fundamentally different biological pathway.

Clinical results

In brand-conducted clinical studies on 73 women across all skin phototypes, 90% showed improvement in dark spots at 8 weeks. The brand also claims results are maintained for up to 2 weeks after stopping use, which is unusual for brightening products.

Niacinamide at 10%

The formula includes 10% niacinamide, which appears third in the INCI list after water and dimethicone. This concentration is consistent with efficacy studies on pigmentation and provides additional brightening, barrier support, and oil control benefits.

Gentle exfoliation with LHA

Capryloyl salicylic acid (LHA) is a lipophilic derivative of salicylic acid. It provides gentle exfoliation and promotes cell turnover to help fade surface-level pigmentation. LHA is generally gentler than traditional salicylic acid.

Safe for all skin tones

The mechanism specifically targets excess melanin rather than overall melanin production. This means it addresses discoloration without affecting your natural baseline skin tone. This is an important differentiation from hydroquinone, which can cause uneven lightening.
